"I am a painter on Martha’s Vineyard and a full-time English as a Second Language Teacher at the high school. This selection of portraits is the culmination of my work with “No Penobscot County Jail Expansion,” an organization that currently consists of a team of thirteen interviewers, transcribers, artists, organizers, and advisors. The PCJ Storytelling Project is a community-based, multidisciplinary project committed to raising awareness about the stories and priorities of people who have been incarcerated at PCJ. I discovered the project through family connections in the Penobscot area in Maine. In fact, I worked alongside two of my aunts on the Penobscot County Jail Storytelling Project. I hope that this project- and others like it-will call attention to the harm caused by the U.S. criminal justice system. Also, I hope the project will jump-start more community-based mental health and substance use services to help keep people out of jail."
