-August 2020-

Bob Avakian captures the magic of the nighttime hours of the fair—the quieter time of day that

he prefers as an artist. Avakian says, “Everyone knows the hustle and bustle of the Vineyard

during the summer months. I search out those times that offer the maximum solitude and I find

that at night.” Each photograph has an ethereal quality that he creates through his lighting

expertise. He says, “I am a low-light photographer.

I shoot long exposures and at times add

lighting with the use of a small flashlight.”

Avakian increases his works’ mystique by

focusing in on a single subject—manmade structures

that exude a sense of isolation. Even when including people, ultimately, we are captured by

the interaction of the playful light and fanciful architecture of the stands. Avakian says, “I have a

love of buildings, probably a result of a lifetime career in the building trades. This combined

with my fondness for the nighttime hours has resulted in an exploration of the night and our

rural habitat. As a result, I consider myself lucky

to experience a glimpse of the Vineyard that is

truly unique.”
